In the past, philosophers in particular have muddied the waters by treating the mind as if it were an object with a sep¬arate existence, independent from the flesh and blood of the brain. This confused view of the mind should disappear once we realize that the word mind is simply a convenient label for describing the brain at work. Speaking correctly, we never have two separate objects—the brain and the mind—occupying the space within our skulls.
